 The Rank & Promotion Procedure

When you first walk into our school you will notice that students all wear different colored belts representing rank. This is part of the martial arts tradition and is used to indicate the level of accomplishment and mastery of skills. As levels of skill increases, students move up through the ranks by changing the color of the belt to symbolize that achievement.

In the world of martial arts, a person's credentials are determined by the rank they hold and who their teacher is. Legitimate rank is given to a student by his or her teacher. Recognition by the seniors in the martial arts community establishes the stature and qualifications of a holder of rank. At Pacific Coast Academy, we pride ourselves on the caliber of our instructors and senior students. Shihan Russ Rhodes' stature among martial artists is recognized by some of the most highly esteemed seniors of their generation.

When your child begins training  they will start with a white belt. Within a few weeks you will be invited to your first belt rank promotion. This varies with each individual depending on the time and effort put forth in their training. After demonstrating a skill level in many of the basic moves that have been learned, the first colored belt will be awarded. There are different levels of each belt.  For example, a black stripe through the center of the belt exemplifies an advanced level, and vertical rewarded stripes at the end of the belt are given by the instructor honoring achievements learned while at that particular belt level.

As students advance to the next level belt they receive a certificate of promotion as an official certification of the newly acquired skill.  In some cases, such as the Tiny Tigers and Tonbos class an embroidered patch is given in addition to the new belt. For example in the Tiny Tigers class for the first promotion from the white belt level -  a white belt with a single yellow stripe is awarded, in addition the student is awarded an eagle patch. For the next level of promotion, a  white belt with two yellow stripes and a ninja patch is awarded. Patches that have been awarded in a promotion may be sewn on to students uniform (or Gi)

Promotions through the ranks at Pacific Coast Academy are predicated on three factors:

  • Technical proficiency in the curriculum material,
  • Calendar time in the previous grade
  • Attendance

Scheduling

In the children's programs, Pacific Coast Academy holds promotions every month, regularly on the third Saturday of the month.

Regular children's classes are canceled on promotion days.

Karate Kids is our entry level program for kids aged 7 - 14 who wish to begin a martial arts program. This first year program has the purpose of teaching our traditional and fundamental skills.

Basic Karate teaches kicking, punching, blocking and strikes. Ju Jitsu teaches evasion tumbling falling and much more.

Karate - Literally, "open hand." is also a general term for Japanese-based striking-style martial arts. There are many different styles of Karate.

Pacific Coast Academy does not currently offer Karate as a specific art in the adult program, however, as a loose description of our children's program, "Karate" is appropriate. Kids at Pacific Coast Academy learn much more than conventional karate skills.

After Karate kids our young martial artists are elevated to our hallmark black belt club program. This is a comprehensive program that cannot be found anywhere else. As student progress to learn Kenpo Ju Jitsu and are exposed to Danzan Ryu Ju Jitsu, Kumite style sparring and Eskrima.

Graduates of the black belt club can continue to grow in the advanced childrens classes. With a strong basis in physical skills, movement and training discipline, Jokyu students spend three years learning the adult curriculum of Ken Ju Ryu - Kenpo Ju Jitsu and recieve an adult, Shodan 1st degree black belt from Shihan Russ Rhodes. In addition Jokyu training includes elements of Ju Jitsue and weapon arts.

As with all of our courses we pride ourselves in teaching excellence, personal attention, and tradition, while providing your child with the most complete and effective methods to reach their full potential.

Pacific Coast's instructors are personally selected, not only for their martial arts skills, but also for their ability to effectively communicate their knowledge and understanding to students of all ages.

Although our techniques are based on knowledge centuries old, our innovative application of that knowledge sets Pacific Coast Academy apart from the other schools.

At Pacific Coast Academy we not only teach our young students the percussion arts (kicking & punching), but we also include Ukime (falls & rolls) and Grappling (ground work).

We realize that each student possesses different physical abilities. Size and strength varies with each individual.  Therefore, once a student has acquired a strong foundation  in the basics, our program will enhance a child's personal physical capabilities and maximize their self-defense skills.

We teach our students using a basic philosophy of positive reinforcement to build Self Esteem, Confidence, Discipline, Positive Attitude and Values. There are many additional benefits that are gained by involving your child in a martial arts program.

Our unique method of training is fun and designed to:

  • Instill A Positive Attitude
  • Build Confidence & Self Esteem
  • Teach the Importance of Strong Values
  • Good Character
  • Promote the Desire to Learn
  • Improve Effort & Motivation
  • Improve Concentration
  • Teach Self Discipline
  • Instill Respect for Themselves & for Others

By embodying these principles in our Karate Kids program, we are helping young people deal with the many problems they face growing up in today's world, including drugs, peer pressure and gangs.

When students begin to demonstrate retention of the curriculum and are ready for new challenges, the Tonbo program builds on the basics from the Tiny Tigers program and develops motor skills, personal growth, and good training habits.

"My Tonbos are some of my most dedicated, dynamic martial artists. Children are wonderful to train becasuse they know no limitations. I'm looking forward to being a part of their futures."

~ Shihan Russ Rhodes  Chief Instructor Pacific Coast Academy of Martial Arts

Program Duration

The number of months spent in the Beginning Tonbo program also varies with children’s own pace of development. Duration of the beginning Tonbo program typically ranges from 6 to 12 months.

The Beginning Tonbo program also contains the same material as the white belt curriculum so their belts follow the color same sequence as all the children’s and adult Ken Ju Ryu classes, but Tonbos still include white. Tonbos typically earn new belts every other month.

When students begin to demonstrate retention of the curriculum and are ready for new challenges, and move on to the Tonbo and Advanced Tonbo programs.

The Tonbo program builds on the basics from the Tiny Tigers and develops motor skills, personal growth, and good training habits.

Tonbos's training is designed to be fun and challenging in the same way as the Tiny Tigers program. Tonbos will take the same principals and themes and provide continuity in aiming to:

  • Instill A Positive Attitude
  • Build Confidence & Self Esteem
  • Teach the Importance of Strong Values
  • Good Character
  • Promote the Desire to Learn
  • Improve Effort & Motivation
  • Improve Concentration
  • Teach Self Discipline
  • Instill Respect for Themselves & for Others
